Frederic Edwin Church works on paper
Spent over an hour scanning through the first half of the Cooper Hewitt's online collection of Frederick Edwin Church studies. Over 2,000 of them! Mind-boggling. His studies have always been more attractive to me than the larger works. The skill involved with doing them on the spot is incredible. His ability to render light is brought down to Earth in his small works, as they are replete with dents, scratches, tears, unfinished portions, unplanned borders and odd sizing.
